laclefdescoeurs:

Liverpool Docks, John Atkinson Grimshaw

“‘The work of Atkinson Grimshaw is valuable and unique in several respects. He made a great popular success out of that amalgam of Pre-Raphaelite sentiment, nature and industry that dominated the culture of northern England in the later nineteenth century. His work is our only visual equivalent to the great epics of industrial change, the novels of Gaskell and Dickens.’ (David Bromfield, Atkinson Grimshaw 1836-1893, exhibition catalogue, 1979-1980, p. 5) Grimshaw began to expand the scope of his subjects in the early 1880s, beginning a series of paintings of urban street scenes and docks set in the evening light for which he is best known. His growing popularity, particularly with art collectors in the northern urban centres, encouraged him to paint industrial views of ports and harbours. Bromfield has interpreted Grimshaw’s port scenes as ‘icons of commerce and the city. They are remarkable in that they record the contemporary port’s role within Victorian life; they appealed directly to Victorian pride and energy. They also show that same darkness, a mysterious lack of complete experience of the subject which one associates with large cities and big business, which Dickens recounts so well in Bleak House and Great Expectations and for which Grimshaw’s moonlight became a perfect metaphor.’ (ibid Bromfield, p. 15)” (via)

I skipped work last night because I wasn’t feeling good physically and tbh, the kind of work depresses and taxes me out mentally so yea I wasn’t really straight up wanting to go even if it meant a salary deduction

what’s annoying is the floor boss lord who dismisses everything like, “oh i have a headache too and i’m not using it as an excuse to not show up”. guess the ‘empathy policy’ we’re promoting is exclusive to the customers only and not the employees.

don’t get me wrong, it’s still my fault - doubly even since it was stupid to expect understanding from someone who worries more about the stats and figures of the center than morale and well-being of the people on the floor.

I know my feelings toward my work are my responsibility but if this is the case with the management and environment, I don’t think I would [want to] last long in here. I have a lot of growing up to do myself throughout the time so we’ll see how everything turns out in a few more days.

having an understanding boss is important for sure like yeah ofc you’re meant to show up most of the time except if you’re really ill but bosses need to be understanding of their employees and how they’re doing too yours sound bad imo

i understand where he was coming from and I get that but that thing was when I was explaining to him that I really wasn’t feeling well (my body was feeling heavy and I had fever. even my coworker noticed the night before that I was getting the chills from slight grazes of air), the moment I mentioned that I also have a bad headache, he gets up on my grill and disregards everything except the headache (even stressing a comparison of himself and his ability to come in to work with a headache to mine). he made the headache like the only thing that there was and that’s what made me really mad but I didn’t talk him down on that since well, he was the boss.

I didn’t take it personally, and I don’t hold that against him at all but it’s hard not to say that I didn’t hate the way he handled my issue there.

I know there’s a lot of fault in me too since I should get used to going into work even if I’m not feeling 100%; most people do that because that is commitment and I have to learn that for myself. When I think about it, what I wanted was a little understanding on their part but then again on their end, that could’ve been taken as coddling.

now is time to get used to dealing with adult-level shit

and really thank you. now that I have let this all out, I’m feeling tons of positive already

skelettflickan:

Some information I gathered while having carpal tunnel syndrome myself! I got it almost six months ago and even though it’s mostly gone I can still feel it when I work too hard.

I want to point out that I have NO medical training and that you SHOULD consult a doctor if you suspect that you have CTS. I will however try to do my best to answer questions if anyone has any.
