yo can I drop some advice all you kids trying to get entry level jobs need to learn? I learned it the hard way and now I shall impart that to you.

when you see this shit, that goes “you need like 10 years experience and all this other qualifications nobody with all that would ever apply for a job like this with”, that means one thing: they are weeding out people who don’t believe they can achieve that level. They go “sigh, I can’t even compete, fuck it.” and don’t apply, saving the company the trouble.

What you, as a fresh new student, need to do- is apply anyway with a Luffy-like optimism that you will get that fucking job!! You don’t have a million years experience BUT YOU’LL TRY AND NEVER GIVE UP ETC. You write an opener letter with that in it, submit your shit, and get that goddamn job because they just found somebody who’s willing to give it a try anyway, who has the confidence and the ability to play with the big boys and they will train you to become a master because fresh meat is vital to the industry.

tldr: APPLY ANYWAY, YOUNG GRASSHOPPER

i really wish i’d read this three months ago

to those who are still looking for their first job: it wouldn’t hurt to try. the worst thing that can happen is that you get a “no”

So, really interesting statistic that just came up in hiring diversity training at work: women will typically only apply to a position if they feel they meet 100% of the requirements.  Men will typically apply if they feel they meet just 60%.

And guess what?  They still get hired, because a lot of job descriptions are total garbage.  These aren’t crafted masterpieces handed down from the divine goddess of Human Resources.  These are things that were thrown together at the last minute 3 years ago by some manager with too many more important things to do, and they’ve been used untouched ever since.

Think about this, and think about those numbers, ladies.  Think long and hard about this statistic next time you are looking at a job description and telling yourself that you can’t cut it.  You probably can, and applying is free.

(P.S.: I’m happy to give resume advice to people - especially new college grads in the tech industry.  That’s the field I know and do interviews in; I’m not sure if my advice would be as applicable elsewhere.)

it’s all true, I can vouch for all this but just because this is the norm doesn’t make it okay.

as much as we want to, not all of us can carry that Luffy-like optimism - I know I can’t, at least not for long. I once broke down in a middle of an interview and it was my third one for the same company. I ended up not getting accepted.

I failed more times than I can count after that experience but the thing that I learned though (and it’s almost too basic) is to do what you can, to your best extent. if you need help, don’t hesitate to ask. I had my aunt accompany me to my following job applications and everything just became a little lighter, easier, more bearable since then. a little outside support goes a very long way, trust me.

it’s okay to complain about these kind of things because REALLY, this is some messed up shit that they do. it’s rather inhuman imo.

but while you complain about it, DO WHAT YOU CAN. let go of expectations - they’re nothing but deadweight. instead focus on what you’re doing at the present moment - whether it be passing the exam or pleasing the interviewer, mind your objective for the moment not the results - don’t be afraid to mess up because you’re bound to learn something from failing an application. get tips, gather information, put your best dress on and once you do, drop the complaining attitude for a while, NO COMPLAINTS, LITTLE OR BIG, NOT EVEN THOUGHTS.

after your applications, once you’re home, you can get to ranting all you like, how smoothly or badly it went. we’ll be here, we’ll be listening.

Breaking news: The D.C. Appeals Court just killed Net Neutrality.

This could be the end of the Internet as we know it. But it doesn’t have to be.

Tell the FCC to restore Net Neutrality: http://bit.ly/1iOOjoe

they want to make the internet like tv. with channels and paying to get to specific websites and things. net neutrality = not doing that

This impacts every internet user. Please signal boost the hell out of this and sign the petition if you are American

I do not reblog things like this very often, but this affects me both personally and my business as a freelance artist.

In the economy here; cash is already strapped as it is. You bet your ass companies would suck the ever living life out of misc. art sites.

I don’t want it to ever come down to me choosing between groceries or purchasing a new tier package via comcast to be able to access tumblr or DeviantArt (let alone not guaranteeing I’ll even be seen by my customer base since they may not want to pay out their asses either). It doesn’t seem important to most, but I do 90% of my business online entirely.

Please sign up, fight for this and share it with your followers/friends/family and urge them to give them hell as well.

Not writing related, but this is incredibly important. While we pay for service via ISPs, the internet has been a relatively free space where everyone, no matter their income level, is able to connect, access a wealth of information, and express themselves. The Internet has become a major part of our culture as human beings and the notion that ISPs might be able to limit what sites I can access unless I pay them more is utterly sickening. A lot of us are cash strapped as is, and I’d rather not be limited even more by someone else’s greed. Net Neutrality is essential and I hope you guys will understand why it needs to remain.

-Morgan

P.S. Signal boost this if you’re able.

limit what sites I can access unless I pay them more

DO YOU WANT THIS? NO?? CLICK THE LINK. REBLOG.

As I understand this ruling, it means that businesses now have to pay extra to ISPs to have access to their websites through that ISP provided at a reasonable speed. If you don’t pay, users’ access to your website will be slowed to a crawl - so independent people and small businesses can forget about getting onto that high speed access tier.

This means that the American internet is going to be firmly under the control of those who have the most money. You’ll only get to see the content of those who can pay the ISPs to provide access at a reasonable speed. This means that you can expect to see skewed representation of just about everything, with those bigger businesses who can afford to pay ISPs a premium for access deciding what you can and cannot read, view and consume on the internet.

This is not something that we have in the UK. Our ISPs compete with each other to provide higher speeds, better services and lower prices, but because there’s a monopoly in the US of a few ISPs who provide services, they can afford to do this to you. You can’t go anywhere else, after all.

Everyone in the US needs to sign that petition, call their representatives, write angry letters and do whatever you can to tell your government that this ruling is Not Okay.

Maybe you guys are sick of this post but It’s really important to freelance artists and pretty much everyone who uses the internet, so here it is again.  \o0o/

Cosplay was created and worn by myself.

I don’t often do this, but I wanted to share my Sumia cosplay with you guys! This was my first time working with worbla/armor/props and I put a lot of time and effort into this costume! I can see the now-glaring mistakes, but I definitely learned a lot and I’m so happy that I got to embody one of my favorite characters. :) My friends encouraged me a lot, and I don’t think I could have completed or worn it (even finished) without them!

A Deep Look into a Dark Sky

"Can you count the number of bright dots in this picture? This crowded frame is a deep-field image obtained using the Wide Field Imager (WFI), a camera mounted on a relatively modestly sized telescope, the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre located at the La Silla Observatory, Chile.

This image is one of five patches of sky covered by the COMBO-17 survey (Classifying Objects by Medium-Band Observations in 17 filters), a deep search for cosmic objects in a relatively narrow area of the southern hemisphere’s sky. Each one of the five patches is recorded using 17 individual colour filters. Each one of the five COMBO-17 images covers an area of the sky the size of the full Moon. [read more]”

Well then, let me show you, because that’s what I do for a living.

Right now, it’s this time of the year, and the little ones have just freshly hatched:

image

You’ll notice they’re still blind and naked when they hatch. So I make them little coats to keep them warm during their first winter:

image

See how they happily line up to put them on:

image

See? Better. Now they’re ready to go and explore the world.

image

And if they make it through the winter and we take good care of them, they will grow up to be strong and wise like their older fellows:

So, in case you were ever wondering, now you know.

I really do not know how to respond to this since i’m used to living in a household where u get heckled for doing things wrong and if everyone’s silent, then I must be doing stuff right. while I DO get praise sometimes, it’s scary and always a bad sign for me because it’s never personal; always done in front of other people which brings expectations which in turn brings potential disappointment.

I’m really sorry, I know I can be an optimist and think happy thoughts but this one’s pretty different and I honestly tried thinking about it but it’s making me really uncomfortable if I ponder about this any further i think im gonna cry im so sorry for being a killjoy i really am

Click here to support Please help me get my car! by Sasha Marie Aghishian:

marimojinguuji:

Hello friends! My name is Sasha, and I need a lot of help right now!

I’ve been living in Japan for a little over three months, and it has become apparent that it is impossible for me to continue taking public transportation to get to and from work. I live in Anan, and I work in Tokushima. In order to get to work by 12:00, I have to be at the train station at 9:17, because the trains only arrive once every hour, and the buses do as well. However, the trains and buses aren’t even close to synchronized, so after getting off the train in Tokushima, I have to wait at least 40 to 50 minutes for the bus to arrive.

This has proven to be a serious financial struggle for me as well, as transportation costs go up to around $200 monthly. Even though my company reimburses the transportation fees, the money still comes from my pocket.

Here’s where you all come in!

I have a couple who has told me they would be happy to sell me their car. They would like me to pay only $2500 for it, since it is an older Toyota model (a Toyota Yaris Verso to be exact). I was initially able to provide the funds because of the money I’d been given to survive until I’d gotten my next paycheck. However, I was unable to purchase anything for myself due to issues with my work visa (which are all cleared up now!) This leads me to having hardly any money to be able to save up due to having to try and set everything up at home all at once.

The other $2000 will go towards getting me to a driving school, as getting a license in Japan is notoriously difficult if you don’t have one from the United States. I had a permit in the US, but never wound up getting my license because public transportation in Oregon was fantastic.

I plan on either the Anan Driving School or the Minami Komatsushima Driving School. The websites can be found here:
Anan:  http://www.anan-ds.co.jp/teigaku.html
Komatsushima:  http://www.komatsushima.jp/hutuusya-campaign/hutuusya-campaign.html#hispeed

The Komatsushima school would be most preferable, as it will have me with a license within one month. However, the Anan school is much closer to where I live.

Normally, I would go to get a loan for this sort of thing. However, no place I’ve been will allow me to take out a loan because the car is in Japan. If even I am able to raise enough to help me for the car, that would be enough to make me happy. I am desperately in need of another form of transportation, because I am unable to get enough sleep to get to work by the time I come home.

I love my job, and the travel time is the only significant amount of stress within it. If I can at least eliminate the travel aspect, it would take a tremendous weight off of my shoulders.
Thank you for your time.

mivvu: congrats for 20 years
