Top FE Characters - #3: Innes
“Surrender? I’m the prince of Frelia. I don’t know the meaning of the words. The fate of the world rides on my shoulders, and I’ll make it to Jehanna. Even if I have to crawl to do it.”
In the past, I’ve gone back and forth about whether Innes or Ephraim was my favorite in FE8, and I’ve probably given inconsistent answers to memes and the like. However, looking at Innes again in my run of FE8 right now has probably cemented him as my favorite, for a lot of reasons.
He gets a lot of hatred from the fanbase, probably for a few reasons. One, he’s a condescending, arrogant, spiny bastard. He’s not afraid to voice his distaste for those he finds beneath him, or to openly make strides to get what he wants. Two - and you’re kidding yourself if you think this isn’t part of it - he’s considered “competition” against a couple of popular ships, and gets thrown under the bus to make them look better. Three, he’s a prepromote, and his stats aren’t exemplary (though they’re far from bad.)
It’s kind of depressing, because all that hate and villainization comes to overshadow a really excellent character. No, he’s not nice or warm or cuddly. Yeah, his ego’s absurd, and he takes his “rivalry” with Ephraim perhaps a bit too seriously. But he’s also a genuinely kind, even noble person underneath all that. He tries to send Gerik and Tethys away purely so they won’t die, even though it would have left him on his own against a huge enemy onslaught which would have likely killed him. Despite the uncouth way it comes across, I think he genuinely cares about the safety of those close to him — and not in a double-standard you’re a woman so I’ll protect you way as is so common for other characters in Magvel, despite some of his remarks at Eirika.
And sometimes, even that snarky, practical side is a breath of fresh air against the rest of the characters. When half the cast is wringing their hands over Lyon and insisting, Innes is all business. He’s the straight man against L’Arachel’s antics and Joshua’s gambling gag, the cool-headed voice of reason to Ephraim’s brash brute force and Eirika’s soft-hearted squish.
He’s evidenced to be a brilliant tactician as well as an exemplary archer, and ends up becoming a diplomat — a role he’s perfectly suited for. The combination of intelligence, foresight, and devastating ruthlessness might not make him Mr. Congeniality, but there’s no doubt it’s a mix that will allow him to pull Frelia through the aftermath of the war not only intact, but thriving.
Even in-game, I doubt Innes will earn himself much adoration from his people. He’s the kind of ruler, I think, that no commoner would ever really love, but who’d pull his country into success nonetheless, even if it was behind the scenes. He’s by far the most competent, capable royal FE8 offers us, and for that, he gets the top spot for Magvel from me.

the pride factor is what makes Innes interesting to me. his is not hubris but a case of swollen dignity with a proper reasoning. he’ll either win or die trying like a champ. Innes actually reminds me of Odysseus. his cunning and skill matched only by his ego. he thinks he’s the best simply because he is.
