So, thanks to this amazing woman: http://fuckyeahfatpositive.tumblr.com/post/10525680538/ive-been-wanting-to-post-this-picture-for-a-while I finally decided to do the Sailor Jupiter cosplay I have been dreaming of doing for years. And here it is, at Ohayocon 2012!
I did not make the costume, the lovely Aridia at Ridikitty.com did, and I felt absolutely amazing in it! It wasn’t until I saw pictures of me from the Sailor Moon photoshoot that my self esteem disappeared. I saw how huge I was in comparison to all the skinny girls around me, and I started crying. I wanted to go back to my hotel room and change, but my boyfriend wouldn’t let me. He reminded me of how much fun I was having and how people were commenting on how awesome I look, and that I am beautiful. So I encourage anyone else out there, no matter what their body size or shape, to learn to love themselves as they are. It’s taking me awhile to get there, but I know I will.
For anyone who is afraid to cosplay because they are scared of what others will think, don’t let people tell you what you can and cannot cosplay. Just remember this: Don’t tailor yourself to the cosplay, tailor the cosplay to you. If skirts needs to be made longer, or certain aspects of the costume altered a bit so you look and feel fabulous in it, then do it! Also, know that shapewear is your friend. For reals. It helps smooth you out and hide parts of yourself you’re not that comfortable with. ^_^
I learned a lot about myself this past weekend at Ohayocon, and I am definitely better for it! I look forward to rocking it out as Sailor Jupiter at other conventions, and hopefully I can show other people that you do not need to fit a certain body type in order to cosplay. I chose Sailor Jupiter because she is one of my favorite characters, and I feel I have a great deal in common with her. And I wasn’t about to let my size stop me from showing my love for the Sailor Moon series and Sailor Jupiter herself. And you shouldn’t either.
