Aoi? omg I don’t think I can do this without spoiling anything… but since it’s here, I’ll fire away.
I think Aoi lacks vital characterization. We only get to see her in a few scenes here and there and then she gets thrown in a major state change when she finds her husband dead. Not that I can blame her for her grief, no. But I just fail to see her more than a shallow character to supplement the Tohsaka maternal role. But perhaps with a little more fleshing out, hers could’ve done better.

Zero Caster is one of my favorite servants actually. He’s kuuruu to the core. He’s not really insane, just deluded. He believes that every one including the god he believes in has abandoned him.
From his experience, he doesn’t kill outright because he wants his victims savor the hope and faith of salvation first before having it crushed helplessly before their eyes. He gives the world a dose of its own medicine, to the extent of even choosing children, who are believed to be the shining hope of a generation’s future as his victims. His madness is twisted but philosophical in a way that he accepts the bitter fate he had suffered in his life and he does it to others not out of contempt or vengeance but because he believes that it is the way the world runs; that hope and faith were human virtues meant to be destroyed.
Saber was the character that got me into the whole fate series. I liked her character design very much that she was cute but at the same time, she wasn’t one of those characters built and tailored for fanservice like the most we see.
I liked how Saber held on to her ideals even if the thought was simply foolish to those around her. Her life from the medieval times up to the grail wars were a repetitious cycle of being ridiculed for being the kind of king that she was. Whether it be her knights, her fellow heroes, or Shirou, she never faltered and instead always stood up to defend her principles. She’s one of the strongest hearts ever in the whole franchise.
Meanwhile Ilya…
I like Ilya simply because she’s cute. And I really feel sorry for her. She was deprived of a good childhood by the grail war and out of her growth in the Einzbern house, has become ruthless and sadistic for a child her age. Nevertheless, she retains the child character in points that we see her genuinely frightened despite what she’s been through already. I wouldn’t say she’s a solid character though since she plays as influence only to Shirou. perhaps if type-moon made a series on how Shirou became Archer Emiya…
I just like the way he looked and his sword and his noble phantasm was very interesting. Although at first I was thinking he was just the typical badass egotistical antagonist. What I liked about his character is that he’s built as a character with one of the highest standings but with the simplest concepts.
See FSN doesn’t give Gil much depth imo. He was just like blindingly chasing after Saber and that anything or anyone that stands in his way is nothing more than dust beneath his boots. Zero does something better by introducing Gil in a better light. It shows that Gil is even capable of respect despite of his arrogance. It was always a matter of quality to him and that he would accept no less than the best. And that given his twisted resolve, he can and will do things simply for the sake of his satisfaction.
